Charles Economou is a musician with wide-ranging interests. His first studies were in Mathematics at Cambridge University, but encouraged by Murray Perahia and Howard Shelley among others, he decided to make music his career. He performs regularly in London and throughout the UK as a solo pianist, accompanist and chamber musician, and his concerto performances have included Beethoven’s Emperor and the Ravel G major. He is particularly in demand as an accompanist for singers, including the renowned baritone Donald Maxwell, with whom he has given many concerts. Meanwhile his solo recitals have presented a diverse repertoire ranging from Bach to modernist pieces such as the Boulez sonatas, alongside the great romantic works of Chopin, Schumann and Brahms.

Apart from his playing, he devotes much of his time to composition. His recent piece, Kurukshetra for violin, piano and reciter, was performed at the Muziekgebouw Amsterdam and broadcast on Dutch classical radio. Arjuna's Transfiguration - a shorter related piece - has been recorded by Hugo Ticciati and Henrik Mawe for their album Sonic Philosophy.

Charles has taught piano since 2003, taking pupils of all ages and abilities from beginner to diploma level. He also teaches theory and coaches singers both amateur and professional and has been on the staff of Ealing Junior Music School since 2006, where he mainly teaches aural. He has enjoyed having opportunities to return to his own school, St Paul's in Barnes, to perform and give talks on the music that interests him, and in 2009 he was invited to Stockholm to visit the specialist music school Lilla Akademien as a guest-teacher, and gave music history classes on a wide range of composers from Mozart and Chopin to Webern and Boulez.
